El Aljarafe, Arabian voice that means elevation, is the village in Seville situated to the west of the city, in the other side of Guadalquivir river. This village shows us Paleolithic, Neolithic early remains and architecture of dolmens and an important relation with the Tartessians mythic
civilization.

During the Betica roman domination, el Aljarafe was well known by the name Vergentum, or by the appellative of Huerta de Hércules. The intense wine and producing of this town supply the capital of the Empire, Rome and other

But if with the romanization of the territory the prodution
grew, with the Moslem conquerand then Islamization it became more
consolidated. The intense Islamization of Aljarafe has been kept until
today, for example in the style of popular construction, the irregular floors and whitewashing
houses, small windows and Moorish tiles… this Moslem mark, mixed with the following Christian domination
(churches, monasteries, chapels, bell towers..) until today, has designed the
present-day character of the town, still maintaining old customs such as the wine and the farming
explotation, which was already produced in the Roman peri.
